How to Choose Wall Murals For Home

Wall murals for home are a popular alternative to traditional wallpaper that can add eye-catching appeal and a sense of depth to a space. They are available in a variety of styles, sizes and materials, including hand painted designs, and can be used to make an accent wall or wrap a whole room.

Murals are also a great way to incorporate a trend without spending a lot of money, as you can easily change them out for a less costly look or re-purpose them in a different space. If you want to try out a trend but are worried about the commitment, consider starting small with a removable wallpaper or a smaller mural that can be painted over later.

Depending on the style of mural, you can also customize it with your preferred colors and textures to create a more personalized touch. You can even choose a color or pattern print that coordinates with the furnishings in your home, or go with something more unexpected to give your space a bold statement.

For example, this floral mural combines soft and natural shades to bring a whimsical touch to a space. The pink, orange and yellow flowers are a nice contrast to the blue gray sky, which veers away from the baby blue hues often seen in kids’ rooms to provide a grown-up backdrop for living spaces.

Another option is to bring a nature-inspired theme into a space with this tree mural that features branches with twilight and sunset colors. It’s the perfect complement to a bedroom or living area with a relaxing vibe.

If you’re looking for a more abstract approach, this mural of falling raindrops brings a geometric feel to the wall. The neutral and white color palette helps keep the design light and airy.

In addition to choosing a mural that suits your personal taste, you’ll also need to consider where in the room you want to hang it. “Open wall spaces without large pieces of furniture will showcase murals the best, as they’ll be the center of attention,” says Miller. “They can be hung on ceilings as well, to draw the eye upward and create a feeling of depth.”

Many murals come in a series of panels that are installed in a specific order to create the entire design. When installing, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure a smooth and seamless application. Most also include instructions for prepping the walls, such as removing paint and applying adhesive paste or self-adhesive to the wall before hanging the mural.

Once your mural is up, be sure to clean it regularly. Most are designed to be wiped down, but you’ll need to use mild cleaners or soap and water to avoid any damage to the material. If you notice mold or mildew, remove the affected section with a wet cloth and allow it to dry completely before using again. You can also use a hairdryer on a low setting to help loosen stuck-on sections of the mural for easier removal.
